Day #27 - Whipping Winds!

The sky was a bright, clear blue and the morning was crisp Wednesday as Kevin and Emi departed their
makeshift "camp" by the Old River Navigation Lock, located approximately 13 miles Northeast of Simmesport, LA.
This navigation lock allows ships to be raised or lowered between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers.  Jim and Jeff parked the bus next to the lock the night before to brave out the storm.
Yesterday was sunny but the WIND pummeled our riders with 35 - 40 MPH blasts!  To use Kevin's word, it was "brutal".  During the course of the day they passed a field of harvested sugar cane which was being intentionally burned.
Just past Ville Platte (meaning flat town), was a lake that was teeming with alligators!  No stoppin' for a dip - keep on a pedaling!
The day mercifully ended after 76 miles in Mamou, LA.  The good news is, they are now on the SOUTHERN TIER TRAIL which will take them all the way to San Diego!  Texas soon!  As my father would say, "Now you're cookin' with gas!"
